    The cluster of galaxies Abell 376

    We present a dynamical analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 376 based on a set of 73 velocities, most of them measured at Pic du Midi and Haute-Provence observatories and completed with data from the literature. Data on individual galaxies are presented and the accuracy of the determined velocities is discussed as well as some properties of the cluster. We obtained an improved mean redshift value z=0.0478^{+0.005}_{-0.006} and velocity dispersion sigma=852^{+120}_{-76}km/s. Our analysis indicates that inside a radius of 900h_{70}^{-1}kpc (15 arcmin) the cluster is well relaxed without any remarkable feature and the X-ray emission traces fairly well the galaxy distribution. A possible substructure is seen at 20 arcmin from the centre towards the Southwest direction, but is not confirmed by the velocity field. This SW clump is, however, kinematically bound to the main structure of Abell 376. A dense condensation of galaxies is detected at 46 arcmin (projected distance 2.6h_{70}^{-1}Mpc) from the centre towards the Northwest and analysis of the apparent luminosity distribution of its galaxies suggests that this clump is part of the large scale structure of Abell 376. X-ray spectroscopic analysis of ASCA data resulted in a temperature kT = 4.3+/-0.4 keV and metal abundance Z = 0.32+/-0.08 Z_solar. The velocity dispersion corresponding to this temperature using the T_X-sigma scaling relation is in agreement with the measured galaxies velocities.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    One-magnon Raman scattering in La(2)CuO(4): the origin of the field-induced mode

    We investigate the one-magnon Raman scattering in the layered antiferromagnetic La(2)CuO(4) compound. We find that the Raman signal is composed by two one-magnon peaks: one in the B1g channel, corresponding to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia (DM) mode, and another in the B3g channel, corresponding to the XY mode. Furthermore, we show that a peak corresponding to the XY mode can be induced in the planar (RR) geometry when a magnetic field is applied along the easy axis for the sublattice magnetization. The appearance of such field-induced mode (FIM) signals the existence of a new magnetic state above the Neel temperature T_N, where the direction of the weak-ferromagnetic moment (WFM) lies within the CuO(2) planes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    BeppoSAX observation of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 85

    We report the observation of the Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) of Abell 85 by the X-ray satellite BeppoSAX. We have both analysed the spectrum obtained in the central 8 arcmin circular region centred on the Very Steep Spectrum Radio Source (VSSRS) and the spectra from a number of sub-regions. Analysis of the spectra allowed us to independently obtain new estimates of the temperature, metallicity and line-of-sight hydrogen density column, both globally (T=6.6\pm0.3 keV, Z = 0.38\pm0.06 Z_\odot and N_H = 5.5^+0.9_-0.7 10^20 cm^-2) and locally. These measures are in good agreement with previous measures based on ROSAT and ASCA data. In the region of the VSRSS, we have tried to disentangle the thermal from the non-thermal X-ray emission. Although we could not do this unambiguously, we have nonetheless estimated the extended magnetic field using the radio spectrum available for this region. We obtain a lower limit intensity of 0.9 \mu G, consistent with our previous estimate. We also derive alpha-elements/iron abundance ratios that turn out to be higher than 1. Such a result tends to support the burst model for elliptical galaxies, where a strong galactic wind develops early in the galaxy history and type II supernovae (SN) may have the main role in the enrichment of the ICM. A two-temperature ICM model was fitted in the central region yielding a main component with roughly the mean cluster temperature and a cooler component with temperature less than 0.1 keV

    Particle Creation by a Moving Boundary with Robin Boundary Condition

    We consider a massless scalar field in 1+1 dimensions satisfying a Robin boundary condition (BC) at a non-relativistic moving boundary. We derive a Bogoliubov transformation between input and output bosonic field operators, which allows us to calculate the spectral distribution of created particles. The cases of Dirichlet and Neumann BC may be obtained from our result as limiting cases. These two limits yield the same spectrum, which turns out to be an upper bound for the spectra derived for Robin BC. We show that the particle emission effect can be considerably reduced (with respect to the Dirichlet/Neumann case) by selecting a particular value for the oscillation frequency of the boundary position
